What to expect:

The boys will NOT have a set time to arrive and leave each station. It is a timed event this year. Point sheets will be distributed at check-in the day of the event and the boys will run the course as a race making sure to remember that points are awarded for doing each station correctly and to the best of their ability!

Each Troop attending will be asked to sponsor a “town” (i.e. station) for the event.  Four of the Troop run activities will overlap with the Webelos program. Troops will be requested to supply the materials as needed to run the event they sponsor.  Your Troop will receive two free registrations for your contribution to the event.  If you need the Scouts/Patrols to bring materials for your activity, provide a list to the Klondike Committee before the January Roundtable. Listed below are the ideas for the activities.  E-mail Raymond Loback (rloback@sandc.com) which activity your Troop would like to sponsor by no later then January 12th.  First to volunteer to sponsor a station gets to run it.

The Webelos Dens and Troops must coordinate on their own with Troops to buddy up for camping overnight and meals.  Meals will not be provided as part of this event.  Webelos are allowed to stay overnight at this event ONLY if they are hosted by a Troop.

Sleds will be inspected to make sure they have all the necessary equipment to complete the stations. Prizes will be awarded for the sled that is the most prepared, the coolest looking, and the fastest.

KLONDIKE STATIONS: (Troops are to sponsors each event) REMEMBER THAT THERE IS NO TIME LIMIT AT EACH STATION! THIS IS A RACE AND THE BEST TIME WINS! Scouts will finish the station, get their scorecard signed, and head to the next station.  The best accumulative activity score and overall time will determine the winning patrol.

Tripod Chair Lash and erect a tripod chair from three poles.  Test it by suspending a rope with a boson’s chair (bowline on a bight) from the top.  One scout must sit in the chair and remain clear of the ground for 3 minutes.

Ice Rescue: Each Scout throws a rope made up of segments to a "victim" who has "fallen through the ice" and retrieves same. Patrol may be asked to demonstrate other forms of ice rescue.

Pole Raising: There is a 12 foot pole in a 30 foot diameter circle with one end of the pole touching the edge of the circle.  Scouts without entering the circle, must use two ropes to erect the pole in the centre of the circle.

Pole throw: Throw at targets hanging from tree.  Points given for earned for accuracy.

Semaphore Flags: The Semaphore flag signaling system is an alphabet signaling system based on the waving of a pair of hand-held flags in a particular pattern. Scouts will need to learn ahead of time the basics. They will be given a word to spell out at the event.

Bow saw challenge: Scouts bring the materials needed to make a simple saw, then cut a piece of sausage off a link for each member of the patrol and then disassemble the saw.  Points will be given for creativity of materials used.

First Aid: Play Kim’s game with a First Aid Theme. The Scoutmaster should collect on a tray a number of articles related to a First Aid Kit and cover the whole over with a cloth. He then makes the others sit round, where they can see the tray, and uncovers it for one minute. Then each of them must make a list on a piece of paper of all the articles he can remember… The one who remembers most wins the game.

Six Knot Relay: Judged on time it is taken to tie six knot correctly.  In turn, each Scout runs 50 ft, ties a knot and returns to tag off the next Scout.  The six knots are the reef, bowline, sheet bend, clove hitch, taut line hitch, and sheep shank.  There could be a mystery knot.

Fire Building: Build a fire, flame needs to boil water.

Emergency Shelter: The patrol must construct an emergency shelter using only the items they have on their sled/person.  Teams must locate a suitable spot given the conditions as outlined by the event staff.  Patrols must work together to erect a shelter and get all members into it.  Points are given for creativity, teamwork, use of knots and lashings.

Finding a Bearing: We will not be teaching Compass skills, but at different points on the course, the Scouts will need to take a bearing using their compass. DISTRICT SPONSORED

Demonstration Stations: TBD – DISTRICT SPONSORED

Iditarod Sled Race: Patrols race sleds for speed over a course against each other.  The Top three patrols are awarded points.

Materials:

A list of all required materials for Scouts to bring will be distributed at the January Roundtable along with some cold weather clothing suggestions. Any boy not properly dressed for the outdoor activity will be asked to leave. (ie, need boots, snow pants (NO JEANS ALLOWED), two pair gloves, hat).

Boys should buddy up with others so there are 5-6 boys manning a sledge. You are responsible for bringing the sledge. (Instructions on building one are attached) and all the materials needed to participate in the stations. Store bought sleds are allowed for the event, but will not be eligible to win plaques.
